Milton, Wisconsin has long been a railroad town, along with neighboring Milton Junction. The Milwaukee & Mississippi (predecessor to Milwaukee Road) built the first railroad line in the state through Milton on its way to Madison and the Mississippi River, and later added a line to the south, into Janesville. Later, Chicago & North Western also built a line through Milton Junction.
Today, the C&NW line is empty right-of-way from just north of Janesville to Fort Atkinson, though Liberty Station restaurant (the former MILW-C&NW depot) tries to carry on the memory with a locomotive and caboose painted in C&NW yellow and green. Meanwhile, the former Milwaukee Road is now operated by Wisconsin & Southern Railroad^. WSOR's JH (Janesville-Horicon) trains take a right at Milton to head up to Waukesha and Horicon, while JMA (Janesville-Madison) trains (as well as some ballast trains for C&NW successor Union Pacific) take a left to get to Madison, and their counterparts return via the same routes. Some of the most exciting news in Milton in the past few years was the construction of the Cargill facility, along with a new rail spur to serve a forthcoming industrial park. This rail spur will have another industry in the near future, as an ethanol plant is being built on the land across the rail spur to the southeast.
